BESOS DE MAMI | BEBE LANUGO

Thursday, August 15, 2013

This week Karla and I had the pleasure to work with Lanugo. Carla Curiel, co-founder and mama of adorable twin girls, focusses on passing on the rich Hispanic culture through her company. Born in the beautiful Dominican Republic, Carla realized the dire need for Latin enriched products while pregnant with her babies. Lanugo was founded and thus a creative outlet was born for mamis to purchase products that were high quality, beautiful, and spoke to the culture that many of us want to hold on to and pass down to our hijos y hijas. Their line features t-shirts, feeding essentials, totes for mama, and even music for your kids to learn and engage with. The shirt Lucas is sporting is just about the most perfect tee ever! It says "barriguita llena, corazon contento" (fully belly, happy heart)! His toddler sized "cafe con leche" water bottle is also just about the cutest thing. Like mama, like son ;).

Any advice you would like to share with someone dreaming of starting a business or following their passion?

It's not fast and it's not easy, but if you are truly doing what you love, work can be very exciting, fulfilling, and even addictive. One great quote that I found useful to repeat to myself every so often is: "It takes ten years to look like an overnight success." Don't give up.

How does being Latina affect the way you raise your children and what traditions do you hope they will continue to pass on?

Well, this question resonates deeply within me, and I could talk forever but I'll try to contain myself :). It affects everything! The way we say hello, the manners I teach, the role that God plays in our lives, the food we eat, and the music we dance, to mention a few. As for the traditions I hope that they will embrace and continue are: ""pedir la bendicion", respect to their elders, unity with the extended family, and big celebration parties for any little thing, always involving dancing.

What part of being Hispanic do you love the most?

If I had to choose only one, I would say it would be our "saxon" (spice). It makes us friendly, loud, fun, and passionate people. It brings out a sense of community and support within us, and it makes us able to embrace and welcome new friends like family.

In the past few months, Lanugo has been featured in Telemundo, in a live interview on CNN en Espanol (programa Notimujer), Mamas Latinas website, and they have qualified for the 2nd round in a Walmart competition. You can support this amazing company and vote here! You can also keep up with updates on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure to head over to Karla's blog to read the 2nd part of our interview with Carla. xo - Mami Nicole
